Heading to the Yamato Museum

You'll see a big blue sign after disembarking, follow the instruction to get to the Yamato Museum.

⛴ Yamato Museum (Kure Maritime Museum)

The giant red submarine displayed outside the museum can be seen from far away.

The museum features permanent exhibitions as well as periodic special exhibitions. The current one is the "Japanese Navy and Aircraft Carriers" special exhibition.

The exhibition showcases models, photographs, and a comparison of multiple aircraft carriers and flight decks. Due to its popularity, the exhibition, originally scheduled to end on March 31, 2024, has been extended until June 2. Don't miss this opportunity if you're interested!

A 1:10 scale model of the Yamato battleship is displayed in the middle of the museum, measuring 26 meters in length. The actual Yamato battleship was about 263 meters long, making it the largest in the world by volume. It was equipped with nine of the largest 18.1-inch cannons and was the most heavily armed battleship ever built.

In the large exhibition room on the first floor, visitors can closely observe a "Zero Fighter Model 62" from World War II, a prototype of the "Kaiten" Type 10 developed as a suicide weapon, and various artifacts from the war period. These exhibits convey the brutality of war and the importance of peace. The museum offers audio guide services in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean.

On the third floor, the Shipbuilding Technology Exhibition Room allows visitors to challenge themselves with ship simulation operations. Through easy-to-understand interactive experiences, visitors can learn about various technological principles related to ships.

The museum sells a variety of souvenirs, including the locally exclusive Kure Yamato Ramune soda.

In the past, to preserve ammunition, carbon dioxide was used in cooling systems. During hot summers, sugar water was supplied to the navy. The drink, which mixed these two ingredients, is the Ramune soda we enjoy today.

 🍛 Beacon Seaside Cafe

It's very close to Yamato Museum (walk for 2 minutes).

It's said that to prevent sailors from losing their sense of time at sea, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force regularly eats curry every Friday.

The feature of the Kure navy curry lies in developing various flavors of curry based on different vessels. Local restaurants need to learn the cooking methods from chefs of various vessels and be certified by the ship captains to claim that they serve Kure navy curry.

This time, you're enjoying the specialty curry from the destroyer Samidare, which is made by simmering beef, pork, chicken, along with spices and vegetables. The rich flavors of the ingredients are infused into the curry, creating a luxurious dish crafted by the ship's chef.

Enjoy the rich flavors of the fish curry and the pork chop curry while feasting your eyes on the scenery of kure port. What a luxurious experience!
