Hokkaido | Sapporo City, here's how to enjoy it!

Located in the northernmost part of Japan, Hokkaido boasts vast landscapes and rich attractions.

If you're still thinking about how to plan your itinerary, consider arranging a leisurely day trip in the city!

Here, I will share a relaxed and enjoyable itinerary that help you to fully experience the charm of Sapporo.

Rental of Porocle e-bikes 1-Day Pass

Do you enjoy traveling independently but worry that walking for long periods might lead to foot pain and delay your plans?

In Hokkaido, renting an electric bicycle is highly recommended, as it allows you to easily and quickly reach various attractions in the city.

This time, I used the 'Have Fun in Hokkaido Pass' to redeem a one-day Porocle e-bike pass at the tourist center on the first floor of the Sapporo TV Tower.

The rental process is incredibly simple: just present the QR code from your electronic ticket and fill out an application form. You'll then receive a rental guide and your one-day pass.

Unlocking the electric bicycle is similar to using YouBike. Simply press the "start" button on the rear wheel lock and then use your card for activation. Once unlocked, you’re ready to go!

The bicycle is thoughtfully equipped with a phone holder at the front, so you no longer have to stop frequently to check your route. You can easily navigate while riding, which is really convenient!

There are approximately 60 return stations for Porocle e-bike in Sapporo. You can quickly find the nearest point by searching from the Map on the official website.

The great thing about bicycles is that you can go wherever you want and stop whenever you like, allowing you to freely explore all the attractions.

First stop: Sapporo TV Tower

Our first stop in the city is Sapporo's iconic landmark, the Sapporo TV Tower, which stands at about 147 meters tall.

At the entrance, there's a cute statue of the TV Tower mascot, along with a signboard, making it hard to resist taking a photo as a souvenir.

Upon entering the tower, follow the signs to the ticket counter on the third floor to redeem your admission ticket. Then, take the elevator to the observation deck, which is about 90 meters above the ground.

At the observation deck, the view is truly fantastic—you can overlook the entire city of Sapporo.

It was during the Tanabata festival, and many wish strips were hung from the ceiling, each inscribed with various blessings and hopes.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can challenge yourself with the tilted "scary window" to take a look at the base of the TV Tower.

In addition to the stunning views during the day, the Sapporo TV Tower is equally enchanting at night. The nightscape here has been selected as one of Japan's Night View Heritage sites, so it's definitely worth a visit!

The TV Tower features Sapporo's highest shrine, and you can test your luck with the nearby gacha machine to see what your fortune holds.

The mascot here even applied for a family Japanese residence certificate (similar to a family registry) through the Sapporo Chuo Ward Office.

It actually got approved! A special ceremony was even held to commemorate the occasion.

The nearby merchandise shop is also worth a visit. The handkerchiefs are both cute and practical, making them a must-buy!

The super popular Chiikawa are available here too!

Second Stop: Odori Park

At the second stop, we head to Odori Park, located in front of the TV Tower.

This is an urban oasis in the heart of Sapporo, stretching about 1.5 kilometers. You can ride an electric bicycle to enjoy different perspectives of the towering TV Tower.

The park is filled with vibrant flowers, and sitting by the fountain to enjoy the water show is a truly uplifting experience.

There are also small stalls nearby, offering light snacks and drinks.

In different seasons, Odori Park hosts various festive events, such as the Lilac Festival in spring, the Beer Festival in summer, the Duluth Fall Festival in fall, and the Snow Festival in winter.

No matter when you visit, you’ll experience a unique atmosphere each time.

Lunch: Sapporo Miso Ramen

When in the birthplace of miso ramen, Sapporo miso ramen is a must-try!

I recommend すみれ(Sumire), a long-established ramen shop not far from Odori Park.

Their signature miso ramen features perfectly chewy, medium-thick noodles paired with tender chashu, soft-boiled egg, and green onions, offering a satisfying blend of textures and flavors.

To finish off your meal, enjoy Sumire's special miso-marinated mentaiko rice. Savor the rich miso flavor and the umami of the mentaiko for a perfect ending.

Third Stop: Sapporo Clock Tower

After our meal, we head to the Sapporo Clock Tower, also known as the Sapporo Tokeidai, which has a history of over a hundred years.

This building, with its white walls and red roof, is one of the few remaining examples of American-style architecture in the area and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Every hour, the pleasant bell rings, marking the time for the local people since the Meiji period.

Dinner: Kaiten Sushi Nemuro Hanamaru

Hokkaido is rich in resources and a seafood paradise.

For a taste of all kinds of fresh seafood, Nemuro Hanamaru is the place to go!

Inside the JR Tower at Sapporo Station, there’s a popular spot with wait times of over 3 hours at peak times.

Tip: Grab a ticket before opening, then explore nearby to save on wait time.

You’re free to take any dish from the conveyor belt. Fill out an order form for specific items.

The order form has English instructions, and sushi items are listed in Chinese and English.

Just write the sushi number, quantity (plates), and mark an X for no wasabi. Super easy!

JR Tower Observatory T38

Located directly accessible from JR Sapporo Station, let me recommend another hidden gem—the JR Tower Observatory T38, which stands about 160 meters high, offering stunning views of Sapporo.

Next to the ticket counter, there’s a LEGO display of Sapporo, featuring some of the city’s famous landmarks.

The wall features information about the world's tallest buildings, and I suddenly spotted the familiar Taipei 101 (third from the left).

After purchasing your ticket, take the elevator to the observatory.

Enjoy the views of Sapporo city through the windows.

Head to T'CAFE on the south side of T38 to grab a cup of coffee. Then, relax in a window seat on the south or west side and enjoy your time.

If you want a unique experience, you must try the "Viewing Toilet" on the east side of T38.

In this men's restroom, you can enjoy the view while using the facilities—a truly special experience!
