Matsue Castle is one of the only 12 remaining original castle keeps (Tenshukaku) in Japan. These existing keeps were built during the Edo period or earlier and are unique in that they have survived in their original form to this day. Completed in Keichō 16 (1613), the keep of Matsue Castle stands alongside Hikone Castle and Himeji Castle as a prime example of castles from the height of Japan’s early modern period. It has been designated a National Treasure for its historical and architectural significance.

This tea house was designed and built in 1779 (En’yo 8) under the direction of the renowned tea master Fumaikō (Lord Fumai). Its layout consists of a tea alcove with two tatami mats and a seating area with four and a half tatami mats, complete with a kitchen and a mizuya (preparation area). The design fully reflects Lord Fumai’s refined taste. Traditionally, a tea room would have a central pillar and the hearth placed on the guest’s tatami mat, but Meimeian features neither a central pillar nor side walls. Instead, the hearth is set using a “mukō-kiri” style directly on the tea mat. The tokonoma (alcove) is about five and a half cedar boards deep, displaying a hanging scroll inscribed by Lord Fumai himself with the words “Meimeian.” The lacquered structure hides the inner pillars, revealing Lord Fumai’s unconventional preferences.

The Japanese garden at Yuushien is like a miniature landscape, artfully reflecting the rich geography of the Izumo region. Within the garden, you’ll find an artificial hill inspired by Mt. Daisen, along with representations of famous landmarks such as “Oni no Shitaburui”, Lake Shinji, and Nakaumi. The flowing water leads to the Sea of Japan, accented by a broad sandbar symbolizing Yumigahama and a stunning white sand and pine garden. As you stroll through Yuushien, let your imagination wander to the legendary tale of Yamata no Orochi, and take in the beautiful scenery of Lake Shinji and Nakaumi that shaped the history of Izumo.
