A moat cruise around Osaka Castle takes approximately 20 minutes and offers a rare opportunity to admire the castle from the inner moat. Experience the “Golden Ship – Osaka Castle Gozabune” with the spirit of a ruler of the land! This Osaka Castle Gozabune is a reconstruction inspired by Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s “Osaka Folding Screens” depicted in the folding screen of Osaka during the Toyotomi era, preserved at Eggenberg Castle in Austria. The site of Osaka Castle was originally Osaka Honganji Temple, whose Buddhist altars were covered in gold leaf. Like the golden tea room of Hideyoshi and Sen no Rikyū, Hideyoshi had a profound love for gold. When the sunset reflects on Osaka Castle, the castle gleams with golden light, earning it the nickname “Kinjo” (Golden Castle / Nishiki Castle). Since 2015, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Summer Siege of Osaka, the Gozabune has been lavishly adorned with gold leaf to honor the Toyotomi family and the soldiers of that era, creating a dazzling golden glow.
