The Joto District of Tsuyama is rich in historical sites and traditional architecture. Here, you can visit the tourist information center Walando and try making gold leaf soft serve ice cream. You can also explore the Tsuyama Western Studies Museum, which houses an extensive collection of Western learning materials. Starting with around 600 items at its opening, the collection has now grown to approximately 9,400, an increase of over tenfold. The museum actively promotes knowledge of Western studies through special exhibitions and lectures, offering visitors a deeper insight into Tsuyama’s cultural heritage.

Iwakura Cave, a natural monument of Okayama Prefecture, is a limestone cave formed over time by rainwater erosion, stretching approximately 1,200 meters in length. Tsuyama Castle, a hilltop castle built by Mori Tadamasu on Mt. Tsuruyama, was dismantled during the Meiji period following the abolition of castles. Designated as a prefectural natural monument, this is a stalactite cave approximately 450 meters in length. Okayama Korakuen is a daimyo garden built during the Edo period by Ikeda Tsunamasa, the feudal lord of Okayama. The garden features expansive lawns, ponds, tea houses, and is designed as a “strolling garden” that allows visitors to enjoy the scenery while walking. Historical structures such as the lord’s residence Enyōtei and a Noh stage are also preserved within the garden. It is ranked among Japan’s Three Great Gardens, along with Kairakuen in Mito and Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, and has been designated a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty. The Okayama Prefectural Museum was established to collect, preserve, and pass down cultural heritage from prehistoric, ancient, and early modern periods, while displaying representative artifacts.
