Introduction |Matsue Castle

Matsue Castle is one of the only 12 remaining original castle keeps (Tenshukaku) in Japan.
These existing keeps were built during the Edo period or earlier and are unique in that they have survived in their original form to this day. Completed in Keichō 16 (1613), the keep of Matsue Castle stands alongside Hikone Castle and Himeji Castle as a prime example of castles from the height of Japan’s early modern period. It has been designated a National Treasure for its historical and architectural significance.
