Introduction | Zuiganji
This is the family temple (Bodhi temple) of the Date clan, dedicated to Date Masamune, the founder of the Sendai Domain, and completed in Keichō 14 (1609) after five years of construction. The main hall features a traditional hon-gawara tiled roof and presents a majestic appearance. Inside, each room is decorated with richly colored folding screen paintings and intricate carvings, carefully designed according to the function of each space. This reflects Date Masamune’s bold yet refined aesthetic sensibility. As a valuable architectural heritage that preserves Momoyama-period art to the present day, the main hall, kitchen area (kuri), and corridors have been designated as National Treasures, making it one of the most important Zen temples in the Tohoku region. As part of this special program, an original clear file will be offered as a commemorative gift for your visit to Zuigan-ji Temple, symbolizing this meaningful connection—a rare opportunity indeed.
